Saving Money on Back to School Shopping: Buying What You Need

It takes planning to save money on back to school shopping.

No matter what you are buying, one the reasons that you are likely to overextend your budget is due to buying what you don't need. It starts to get expensive when you start just buying things because they are a good deal. This is very apparent in back to school shopping. When it comes to saving money on back to school shopping, here are some tips that can help you stick to what you need:
  • Take an inventory of the current school supplies. Whether you are returning to college or your child is going back to elementary school, chances are that there are plenty of things that can be used again this school year. Go through the clothes to see what still fits, and go through the supplies to see what is still serviceable. Figure out exactly what you have that can be used in the new year.
  • Make a list of what you still need. You can also make an "alternate" list of things that would be nice to have -- but only if there is still money left in the budget.
  • Look for best prices. This can be done by looking through sales fliers and even looking online. Compare prices for the things that you need, and figure out where you need to go to get the best prices. Organize your list according to the visits you will be making, and group inexpensive items from the same store together.
  • Stick to the list while you do your back to school shopping.
It takes planning to save money on back to school shopping. However, right now it is more important than ever to keep track of your spending and avoid major splurges that could break your budget. In the end, your wallet will thank you.
