Fibre-reinforced ceramic matrix composite armour.

A combination of hard and ductile materials is used to create a type of armour developed by Northrop Grumman Corp.

The invention, US Patent 6 135 006, comprises extremely hard layers designed to shatter an impacting projectile or shrapnel so that it dissipates at least a portion of kinetic energy and disperses the projectile pieces over a wide area.
