Pentagon's $401.7 Billion Budget Request Would Help Fund New Aircraft Carriers.

Feb. 3--WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon's 2005 budget request would help modernize the Army, give troops a 3.5 percent pay raise and make another down payment on a next-generation aircraft carrier.

The $401.7 billion spending plan, a 7 percent increase over last year's request, fails to include any new money for ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. As much as $50 billion in extra funding could be requested midway through the new fiscal year, Defense Department official
