Intrusion detection systems (IDS) help organizations protect their computer resources, which becomes a more daunting task as computers spread throughout the enterprise. Sales of IDSs increased from $40 million in 1997 to $100 million in 1998. The two types of IDSs are scanners and monitors, both of which work on networks or individual computers: the former are static and may be called vulnerability checkers; and the latter are dynamic and able to detect attacks in progress.
