The Hip-Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN), the largest non-profit- national coalition of hip-hop artists and record company executives, was founded in 2001 by Russell Simmons, Founder of Rush Communications and Chairman of HSAN. The organization is dedicated to harnessing the cultural relevance of "hip-hop" music while serving as a catalyst for education advocacy and other societal concerns fundamental to the well being of "at-risk" youth throughout the United States. The first in a series of 2004 Summits will be held in Houston on Jan. 31 during the Super Bowl Weekend at Texas Southern University. The Houston Summit's theme will be "Taking Back Responsibility: Youth Economic & Political Empowerment." Over 12,000 youth are expected to attend the Houston Summit.
Charities: The charities that will benefit from the Super Bowl Summit party are MusiCares Foundation, which is affiliated with the Grammy's supporting music education among America's youth, and Child Advocates, a Houston-based charity that mobilizes volunteers to help end the vicious cycle of child abuse.
Entertainment: DJ Hollywood, resident DJ at Palm in Las Vegas, will be spinning during the night. DJ Hollywood has earned DJ of year and entertainer of the year awards. MTV will also be filming at the party for a for a future reality series. Other special appearances by Scarface, Ronnie Spencer and David de la Garza of La Mafia.
