Alleged veterans' checks theft brings federal charges

Ramona Walker, 53, a resident of New Orleans, was charged Friday in a one-count indictment by a federal grand jury for theft of public money, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.

Walker allegedly stole 12 Veterans Affairs dependency and indemnity compensation checks valued at approximately $13,847

from Jan. 20, 2003 through April 30, 2004.

Walker faces a maximum term of 10 years imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, three years of supervised release following imprisonment and a $100 special assessment.

The case was investigated by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Inspector General Office of Investigations. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Andre' Jones.
