The use of arrester cables is essential in high-speed racing cars that otherwise might lose a complete axle in an accident, which unrestrained could be potentially lethal to onlookers.

As a result, all such vehicles are fitted with arrester cables that in the event of an accident ensure the wheel assembly is held to the vehicle's body, reducing the potential hazard.
