Not even the greatest distance can come between a dog and his dinner thanks to Cleveland's North Coast Dogs.

In February, the dog behavioral and training company launched a home-delivery service after owner Ed Dickson's clients started barking about their troubles finding natural, upscale

dog food brands.

"The food is hard to get a hold of at most chain dog stores, so we just wanted to make it convenient," Dickson says.

The company only sells "human-grade" (we'll take their word for it) pet food lines. Brands include Fromm, Evo and popular sellers Innova, Bravo and California Natural. North Coast Dogs also sells and delivers toys, supplements, collars and shampoos as well as cat food and litter.

Dickson says these food and product lines reflect his commitment to quality and nutrition. "I'm proud of the fact that I won't bring it in to sell unless myself or another trainer has used it."

While some brands are pricey, Dickson believes clients are getting more for their dollar.

"The companies ... won't sacrifice quality for price," he says. "Although it can get expensive, there are other things that diffuse the cost."

The quality and nutrition of the food keeps a dog fuller for longer, so owners don't have to purchase food as often. In addition, it keeps a dog in better shape, which can also cut the cost of doctor visits and health problems.

The monthly service charges a $5 flat fee for home delivery and travels to homes in Cuyahoga and eastern Lorain counties.

Although owners have been slow to adopt the service, Dickson believes the business will pick up as word spreads.

North Coast Dogs will be offering another line of food within the year. And in the next several months, the company also plans to unveil a small line of sports team shirts for dogs.
