Participants at a roundtable conference on the future of home building all agreed that greater government regulation, skilled labor shortages and local no-growth movements would still be the industry's most serious problems in 2004. The participants, representing some of the top companies in the home construction sector, also predicted an expansion in electronic commerce, greater use of centralized design and selection centers, the rise of allied trades, a higher demand for defect-free houses and more customization of production-built homes.
