MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Ron Jones, Editorial Director of Green Builder Magazine and Founding Partner of Green Builder(R) Media, has received the 2006 green building Advocate of the Year Award in the Builder category from the National Association of Home
"Ron served as charter chairman of the NAHB Green Building Subcommittee and has worked tirelessly ever since to help bring green building into the mainstream," said current NAHB Green Building Subcommittee chairman Ray Tonjes, a custom home builder in Austin, Texas.
A widely known green builder for over two decades, Ron Jones has been a peerless advocate of the movement on a national level. Jones is the only person ever to serve as a member of the Boards of Directors of both the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). He served for two years as charter chairman of the NAHB Green Building Subcommittee, which released the Model Green Home Building Guidelines, and he is an original member of the USGBC LEED for Homes Committee .
Jones' industry service also includes terms as local and state Home Builders Association President, and as a National Vice President for the NAHB representing Area 13.
Jones has devoted his work to responsible building that minimizes the use of non-renewable energy and natural resources; provides a healthy living environment for inhabitants of a building; and reduces harmful effects on the environment. Jones has founded two other companies, Green Builder(R), an international consulting and development firm, and Sierra Custom Builders, a nationally recognized, award-winning design/build company.
"As the Green Builder, I hope to change the way people see and think about the places in which they live, work, and play. I hope to inspire in them an undeniable understanding, intellectually and emotionally, of the inextricable relationship between built environments and the natural one," said Mr. Jones.
The hard work of Mr. Jones and other pioneers in the green building industry is paying off: the number of builders focused on green building issues grew by 20% in 2005, and that number is expected to increase by another 30% in 2006, according to a recent study of NAHB members by McGraw-Hill Construction (NYSE: MHP). "Green home building is at a tipping point among the builder population," said Harvey Bernstein, vice president of Industry Analytics and Alliances for McGraw-Hill Construction. He was quoted in a recent NAHB Nation's Building News article that reported preliminary survey results. The full survey results will be published shortly.
