HOUSTON -- AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, today announced that Houston-based subsidiary AMEC Paragon's employee volunteers
AMEC Paragon has been active in RTH - an initiative that provides home repair services for low-income elderly and disabled homeowners located in Houston - for more than 10 years, completing 22 assignments through the program.
"We at AMEC Paragon are extremely proud of our long association with RTH and of the confidence placed with us in the delivery of the 5000th RTH home. Community volunteerism is a cause that AMEC Paragon employees have embraced throughout our 27-year history," said Terrance Ivers, AMEC Paragon's president. "This program does an excellent job of bringing together corporate-sponsored repair crews for the worthy cause of repairing and improving the homes of people in need."
The recipient of the organization's 5,000th home repair is Dorothy Goffney, a 73-year-old disabled resident of Houston's historic Fifth Ward. AMEC Paragon's manager of Expediting and Logistics, Mike Pierce, led the team of 30 AMEC Paragon and nine Boeing volunteers who painted, replaced siding and installed new front and side decks, a front door, a 20-foot wheel chair ramp and window screens for Goffney's home over the course of three Saturdays in October.
"The volunteers did a beautiful job, and they went about their work so faithfully and intensively -- as though they were doing it for their own home," said Goffney. "It was truly a job well done and means a lot to me."
Pierce recently received RTH's Golden Hammer Award at its fall kickoff luncheon for his exceptional commitment to the repair program and guidance as crew leader on home repair assignments completed by AMEC Paragon volunteers over the course of several years.
"We always look forward to working on this community project because it is very fulfilling, and we are proud to lend our engineering and project management expertise where it will help improve someone's quality of life," said Pierce.
According to Pierce, AMEC Paragon's teams often add to the initial scope of work provided by RTH. For example, in addition to the ramp and exterior repairs, the company put the finishing touches on Goffney's property by adding landscaping for further beautification.

Robert Conklin, RTH executive director, said, "We thank AMEC Paragon for stepping up to the plate to help enhance Ms. Goffney's quality of life through the sacrificial, skilled restoration they performed on her home. It's because of the great work contributed by companies like AMEC Paragon that citizens like Ms. Goffney can continue to live independently and gain a new sense of hope."
