$30-Million UCSD Facility Under Way

San Diego, Calif.— McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (www.mccarthy.com ) has begun construction on the new 110,000-square-foot Student Academic Services facility at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), located at 9500 Gilman Dr., La Jolla, Calif.

UCSD Senior Architect Pnina Goldberg is providing project oversight for the $30-million project. Completion is scheduled for March 2007.

Designed by renowned San Diego architect Rob Wellington Quigley, FAIA, the new UCSD Student Academic Services facility consists of a concrete and structural steel hybrid frame, with curtain wall exteriors and ornate finishes. The five-story facility will encompass an auditorium and a café, in addition to housing the UCSD academic services faculty.

Ron Hall is serving as principal-in-charge for McCarthy. KPFF is the structural engineer. Other consultants include Bechard & Associates, mechanical and electrical engineer; Boyle Engineering, civil engineer; and Wallace, Roberts & Todd, landscape architect.

In addition to the UCSD Student Academic Services facility, McCarthy is currently underway with a renovation of the UCSD Biomedical Library, which is expected to be complete in 2006.
