FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 2004

Centex Construction Company's Mid Atlantic Division has received a $41 million contract to construct the National Museum of the Marine Corps next to the U.S. Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Va.

The contract was awarded by The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. Construction of the museum is expected immediately and is slated for completion in April 2006.

Highly visible from Interstate 95, the landmark project on a 135-acre site will include 120,000 square feet consisting of museum gallery space, an orientation theater, office space, gift shop and an entry lobby throughout its two stories. The museum will be constructed using glass, structural steel and composite concrete decks. In addition to comprehensive general contracting services, Centex's scope of work includes sitework that will feature colored concrete, granite pavers, concrete memorial walls, architectural finish concrete and road work.

A unique element and the focal point of the project will be a 210-foot tilted mast soaring through a 160-foot glass atrium, a design inspired by the flag raising at Iwo Jima. Within the atrium will be planes, helicopters, tanks and other large exhibits of the air, ground and sea capabilities of the Marine Corps. These features will capture and bring to life over 200 years of Marine Corps history.

Fentress Bradburn Architects Ltd., of Denver, Co., designed the building with an artful combination of materials and symbolic geometry that embodies and expresses Marine Corps values: honor, courage and valor. The design includes multiple phases, including future expansion that may include a 400-seat IMAX theater, a 1,500-seat auditorium, an office building and a conference center. Jacobs Facilities, Inc., of Arlington, Va., is the construction manager.
