Mining probably exhibits greater variety in terms of technology and scale than any other industry sector. For example, earlier this month, we reported that a new uranium mine in Saskatchewan will need to mine and process just 150 t/d of ore in order to meet its annual production target, with virtually every component of the mining operation remotely controlled (MJ, September 8, p.192). At the other extreme, a new copper project in Indonesia is producing in excess of 140,000 t/d of concentrates, using seawater in the metallurgical processing.
