BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 24, 2002
Tomorrow night, when construction manger Tony Calderone steps into the spotlight and up to the stage at the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Excellence in Construction Awards Dinner, he will be walking in the shadow of his father's footsteps. His father, a seasoned 40-year veteran of the construction industry will be leading the audience in applause.
Tony is a second-generation construction pro, one of two brothers who followed their father not only into the construction industry, but to work at the same company, BE&K. Calderone, a resident of Trussville, was the manager of a $38 million power plant generating 340MW of power in the foothills of Louisa, Kentucky. The project earned First Place Honors from the local ABC Chapter in the category of Industrial projects from $25 to $99 million. It will be nominated for national honors in the ABC National competition being judged in Washington, DC in December.
The unique challenges of the project site and adverse weather conditions were key to the award selection. The site is constrained by the Big Sandy River, an active industrial rail-freight track, and a major highway. "Major equipment was choreographed on that narrow site like a ballet," explained BE&K spokesperson Robin Paulding. "The project was further complicated by the installation of prototype environmental technology. Calderone and his team of 205 workers completed the project ahead of schedule and under budget."
Calderone's father Joseph, joined the BE&K Construction team in 1972. He is currently a Civil Superintendent with BE&K. His brother Carl who works in the planning and scheduling department, has worked for BE&K since 1986.
BE&K, through its global network of affiliate companies, provides engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance services to the process, manufacturing, industrial, power, and telecommunications industries. BE&K has been recognized as an industry leader in family friendly workplace practices, honored as a recipient of Working Woman magazine's "Diversity Champion" award, included in Fortune Magazine's listing of "Best Places to Work in America" and is on Forbes Magazine's listing of the "Top 400 Privately Held Companies in the U.S." This year marks the 30 year anniversary celebration for BE&K.
