The Democrats: "Al Gore and Democrats have long defended the mortgage interest deduction and the low-income housing tax credit ... we must reinvigorate our communities and support our families through partnerships and targeted investments and eliminating community redlining by lenders that will better harness the power of markets to create the housing we need. ... We must pay down the debt to keep interest rates low. ... We must ensure that housing costs in thriving communities do not outpace the income of middle class families... We must encourage the renovation and construction of affordable housing closer to places of work and to mass transit..."
