Weis Markets Raises Over $218,000 For September 11 Disaster Relief
In addition, Weis Markets Chairman Robert F. Weis said the Company would make a substantial corporate donation to the Twin Towers Fund, a charity assisting families of emergency, fire and law-enforcement personnel injured or killed as a result of September 11's attacks.
Since September 14, all Weis Markets stores, including Mr. Z's in Northeast Pennsylvania and Kings in the Lehigh Valley, have participated in the fundraising efforts. Customers made their contributions by adding to their checkout total when paying for their groceries. These efforts concluded last week.
"Our customers and associates have responded in a strong and generous fashion to the sad events of September 11," said Weis Markets Chairman Robert F. Weis. "We are forwarding their contributions to the Red Cross's Liberty Fund which is targeted to the attack's victims and their families."
In addition, Weis Markets announced on September 24 that company associates called up to active duty in the National Guard and military reserves will receive up to 26 weeks of paid leave while retaining their benefits.
Founded in 1912, Weis Markets employs more than 20,000 associates and currently operates 163 stores in six states: Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and West Virginia.
