One of our cars is an old Honda and every time I used to drive it, I would comment to myself about how much I hated the steering wheel. It didn't feel smooth, and it just totally bugged me every time.

Finally, I'd had it. I went in to the local variety store and purchased a steering wheel cover. It was so simple - make the purchase, and then put it on. Immediately I was glad I did it, but a funny thing happened that I started noticing more and more. I would comment to myself (and still do) about how GREAT the steering wheel is now - the cover is so soft and nice to the touch. I am tactile, so it isn't a one-time favor I did myself by ending this toleration - it is an "every time" thing.

That is the great thing about tackling tolerations - or things that bother you - no matter how small. Once you resolve them, you often find out that they affected you in a bigger way than you thought. For me, it was a constant thing whenever in this car - and now the comments in my brain are so positive -- oohh.... smooth soft steering wheel cover. I know it may sound silly, but we do this all the time in our businesses.

Think of a toleration that you put up with on a regular basis. Let me offer a few possibilities:

You interact with someone in a less than constructive way because they are late/sloppy/etc. You put up with it rather than tackle your toleration.

You have less than complete customer data, or your CRM or database system hasn't been cleaned up.

You have a vendor who isn't getting back to you, and based on the business you do with them, they should.

See, we all have tolerations in business - with ourselves, with our systems, and with others. Tackle just THREE and I will bet that it will make your life easier, and it will make business better. Take the "3 toleration" challenge and let me know by email or by commment how you do.
