20+ Tips for Cold Calling in the New Year  PT 17

28. Cold callers are human too. The connotation being that we are ”flakey” and unreliable. The truth is that many of us are very reliable ,intelligent, well educated and creative individuals who are just doing this to ay the bills until we can finish school or land the job of our dreams. I never thought I’d be doing this at this age for this long but here I am. I think I stay with it for several reasons.

A. I’ve been able to carve out my own niche in the market place.

B. When I started there were very few African Americans (if any) who were in the business-let alone owned their own cold calling campaign.

C. I wouldn’t continue doing this if I didn’t make a good living doing it.

D. I have an opportunity to help a business grow with my knowledge and expertise.

I don’t have many pet peeves but as a professional cold caller I do have one very important one. Sales people who blow off appointments and then complain about not having enough to go on. I’ve run into this problem quite a bit over the years. I won’t go into the reasons for this happening but suffice it to say it can be problematic. Here’s why. It takes quite a bit of time, energy and effort to get a prospect on the phone. Even more to set an appointment. To then have a sales person blow off a meeting because they either forgot or don’t think the appointment is worth their time is embarrassing as well as frustrating to say the least. It shows a lack of respect for the cold caller, and the prospect.

If you’re able to hire a cold caller be sure that you’re hiring someone who is there to help you. After all it’s a team effort. Listen to what they have to say. Help them to succeed any way you can. But leave them free to do their job (micro managing doesn’t work).Be available to answer questions. Remember that we (cold callers)are not mind readers. And most of all respect us.

I hope that you found these tips helpful. Again if you apply even a ¼ of what you’ve read then you’ll have a more success campaign in 2008.
