With His Work, Marcelo Rey Nationally Impacted
Latin GRAMMY(R) Awards; Editor Looks to Provide Quality
Entertainment Journalism for Hispanic Community
La Opinion today announced that Marcelo Rey has been named entertainment editor for the nation's leading Spanish-language newspaper.
"I am excited for the opportunity to fill a void in the Hispanic entertainment world," said Rey. "I consider myself an aggressive journalist who will provide La Opinion readers with more quality entertainment news -- something the community can rely on and take pride in."
Rey currently is heading up La Opinion's Latin GRAMMY coverage (occurring on Sept. 13, 2000) and recently exposed a controversy about the lack of representation of the entire U.S. Latin community, including Mexicans. His coverage has revealed a consortium composed of Sony and Emilio Estefan controlling the Latin music market and artists' promotions. It has generated nationwide attention.
Rey has been a print journalist for nearly 20 years, focusing on the music and entertainment industries and writing for publications including La Opinion, El Clarin (Argentina's top newspaper) and La Razon (leading Latin American evening newspaper).
"Once again, La Opinion is the forerunner reaching out to the Hispanic community and making a difference," said Gerardo Lopez, La Opinion's editor. "We are reinforcing the Spanish-language press' power and showing our comprehensive, and trusted, coverage can have a national impact."
Prior to joining La Opinion, Rey founded his own company, Arpa Muzik Management, to work with El General, a well-known Latin American musician who has been awarded MTV's Best Latin Artist Award and Billboard Magazine's Best Latin Rap Artist Award. He also has publicized various important Latin music artists, including Luis Miguel and Camilo Sesto, and worked with BMG US Latin and several artist management agencies.
Founded on Sept. 16, 1926, in Los Angeles, La Opinion is the nation's largest Spanish-language daily newspaper. It circulates throughout the five-county Southern California area and reaches more than 600,000 readers daily. The newspaper posted an 8 percent increase in daily circulation figures in the last audit period earlier this year, for the second audit in a row, and an impressive 11 percent increase in its Sunday circulation (Source: ABC Audit).
