Most R&D efforts are focused on high-temperature superconducting (HTS) materials as viable substitutes for low-temperature superconducting ones. HTS products consume less energy because they require liquid nitrogen. Current research are geared towards expanding HTS applications.

Most of the hype is dead, few commercial products have appeared, and only a handful of companies are active. But for those who work on them, high-temperature superconducting (HTS) applications appear to be closer to realization than ever before.
