C. David Decker to be president of GTE Laboratories.

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 1995--GTE Corp. today announced the appointment of C. David Decker as president of GTE Laboratories Inc., effective Oct. 1, 1995. GTE Laboratories, Waltham, Mass., are the center of research and development activities of GTE Corp.

Decker, 50, currently

Decker joined GTE in 1973 as an advanced research engineer at GTE Sylvania's Electro-Optics organization in Mountain View, Calif. He became research and development (R&D) section head in 1975 and R&D department manager in 1977. In 1979, Decker transferred to GTE Laboratories as a research manager. He left GTE at the end of 1981, and during 1982 was director of the RCA Advanced Technology Labs in New Jersey. He rejoined GTE Laboratories in 1983 as director of the Fundamental Research Laboratory, and was promoted to his current position in 1986.

From Oct. 2 until his retirement, Redmond will assume the position of special assistant to Der Marderosian. "John has served GTE Laboratories well for 10 years," said Der Marderosian. "His leadership during an important transitional period for GTE has contributed immeasurably to the company's technical competitiveness. In his new position, John will apply his expertise to technical issues affecting GTE as a whole."

Decker holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Rice University, a master's degree in physics from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree from Wabash College.

Before joining GTE, Decker was a physicist at Arthur D. Little Inc., the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Decker served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant from 1969 to 1971, including duty as a communication officer with the 52nd Artillery Group in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971.

Prior to joining GTE Laboratories in 1985, Redmond was vice president for engineering at GTE Communication Systems. Before that, he was general manager of the Digital Systems Division and vice president of engineering for Stromberg-Carlson Corp. He also had served as corporate director of research and development for the General Dynamics Corporation.

GTE is the largest U.S.-based local telephone company and a leading cellular-service provider in the United States.
