With the increase in power and decrease in cost of desktop computing, it is now feasible for useful molecular modelling work to be carried out with inexpensive personal computers. Traditionally, graphical molecular modelling has required expensive workstations or mainframes due to their sheer number-crunching power and graphic update speed. Now that 486 PC clones and the new Macintosh Quadra range have brought (near) workstation speed to a wider audience, more demanding tasks such as molecular modelling can be carried out at home or from the comfort of your own office.
