Business/Technology Editors

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 2000

CADD Edge, Inc. announced today they are working cooperatively with The Institute for Manufacturing Research (IMR) and the Long Island Forum for Technology (LIFT) to bring 27 seats of SolidWorks(R), a 3D Mechanical

Engineering Design Software, to the State University of New York at Farmingdale.

The new Computer Aided Design (CAD) software provided by CADD Edge's Uniondale, NY office will be used by the IMR to enrich SUNY Farmingdale students' education with state of the art engineering design technology. The Institute will also offer advanced CAD workshops on SolidWorks to upgrade the skills of local industry personnel.

"Combining the strengths of SolidWorks, LIFT, IMR at SUNY Farmingdale and CADD Edge, all leaders in their respective marketplaces, will have a significant impact on Long Island's economic development," states Tim Preston, Principal at CADD Edge. "Our SolidWorks-certified Long Island office, combined with SUNY Farmingdale and LIFT staff, looks forward to being instrumental in assisting companies in successfully implementing automation tools that increase their productivity and directly contribute to their profitability."

Since 1996, the Institute for Manufacturing Research has assisted more than 50 of Long Island's small and medium-sized companies to achieve higher levels of industrial competitiveness in the current global market economy. IMR's outreach efforts have been supported by a cooperative relationship with LIFT. Along with a powerful blend of research, development and teaching talents, IMR offers Long Island's industries access to manufacturing processes including full industrial scale laser cutting, thermal spray coating, rapid prototyping, vision guided robotics for automated assembly, CNC machining, DCC/CMM, CAD/CAM, and cellular manufacturing systems.

With the assistance of CADD Edge, LIFT is acquiring SolidWorks as its primary solid modeling tool in conjunction with a new course that IMR at SUNY Farmingdale is preparing to offer to students enrolled in the mechanical engineering technology program as well as to local industry. According to Dr. Hazem Tawfik, director of the IMR at SUNY Farmingdale, "SolidWorks is a windows-based intuitive parametric solid modeler that is easy to learn and extremely user-friendly. SolidWorks suits LIFT very well with its product development initiative and its engineers will be able to generate stereolithography files for use in the rapid prototyping machine at IMR."

For more information about this new and exciting addition to the IMR's CAD/CAM and stereolithography capabilities, please contact Dr. Hazem Tawfik, IMR at SUNY Farmingdale, at 631-420-2307 or Mark Behan, LIFT, at 631-755-3321.
