The Symbiq[TM] infusion pump is a medication management system that brings unprecedented safety, reliability and advanced technology to the health care system. The breakthrough device introduces innovative features to improve the quality of patient care by safely delivering intravenous (IV) medications and fluids. Used primarily by nurses and doctors in hospitals and other care settings, the intelligent pump incorporates a wide range of user-friendly features to reduce the possibility of medication errors.

The Medical Design Excellence Awards competition is organized and presented by Canon Communications LLC (Los Angeles) and is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Entries are evaluated on the basis of their design and engineering features, including innovative use of materials, user-related functions that improve health delivery and change traditional medical attitudes or practices, features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient, and the ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges so that the product meets its clinical objectives.

A rigorous review of entries was conducted by an impartial, multidisciplinary panel of judges with significant expertise in fields ranging from medicine to industrial design.
