EVERETT, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 2000

Retailers spend millions of dollars in their stores to ensure their branding is consistent.

Yet at the most personal point of contact

-- the checkout stand -- the scanning equipment rarely matches the rest of the store environment. Intermec is changing the rules of the game with two new scanners.

No trade-off on professional power here. The MaxiScan 2210 and 2220 are compact, omni-directional laser scanners with a dense 20-line scan pattern for quick, first-time reading and an adjustable depth of field to avoid mis-scans. Their scan pattern is optimized for the squarer codes used in retail, such as EAN/UPC.

The MaxiScan 2210 fixed station scanner comes with a choice of five different colors for the front and top plates so they can harmonize with their retail surroundings. Plate color choices include red, blue, green, yellow and gray.

"The 2210 and 2220 have been built from the ground up with retail in mind," says Dan Bodnar, data capture business unit director for Intermec. "With their ultra-compact size, snappy scanning, easy installation and ability to change plate colors on the 2210, they're a perfect fit for retail stores or any place where fast performance and tight space is critical."

The 2210's versatile mounting kit, which includes a bracket and mounting points, allows it to be securely fastened in crowded environments. The 2220 can be picked up for hand-held use on big items or positioned on a counter for hands-free use. The 2220 also has an adjustable head that allows users to swivel and re-focus the scanner up or down as needed for odd-sized items.

Both products come with a replaceable scanning window that users can simply snap into place when the previous window becomes scratched and hampers scanning ability. The 2210 and 2220 also have a two step sleep mode and fast wake-up ability that guarantees the scanner will be ready for use after extended periods of down-time. Each scanner comes with a three-year warranty.

As with most of Intermec's data capture products, the 2210 and 2220 are configured using EasySet(TM) PC software to simplify and maximize the setup. EasySet allows the application to be tested on-line; when the parameters are optimized, they can be saved in a file for downloading or printing as setup bar codes to make cloning scanners quick and easy. Scanners can be connected with a variety of cables, including common wedge and wand cables as well as USB cables.
