How Should I Back Up My Data?

Date: Monday, January 7 2008

If a server goes down due to software failure or a disaster, you could lose all of your critical business information. Therefore, server backup should be a key part of your daily business operations. Luckily, a number of easy options for protecting your data exist. Manually backing up your data to magnetic tape still works, although tape systems can be complicated and time consuming. Another option is backing up remotely over the Internet, which carries with it the added benefit of storing backed-up data in a separate location (protecting it from potential damage due to a local natural disaster). And then there are software systems that allow you to back up your data automatically to an in-house server or external hard drive.

Before deciding which method is best for your business, make a list of what data needs protecting and how often it must be backed up. Then estimate your budget and weigh your options.
