Face-to-Face Technical Help; A Connecticut Entrepreneur Offers Nerds To Go.

GUILFORD, Conn. -- When your computer is sick, "Who you gonna call?" Not someone at a help desk in a distant state -- at least not according to what local entrepreneur David Colella has discovered. His on-site computer service business, Nerds To Go (www.nerdstogo.com), has expanded throughout

Connecticut and into other states.

Founded three years ago as an in-home repair service for sick computers, the Nerds To Go team of 30 people now serves consumers and small businesses throughout Connecticut. They also have subcontractors in Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, Arizona, and California.

"Nearly 20 years in the computer support industry has taught me that if a person with a technology problem has a choice, they prefer to have help from someone in the same room with them, rather than having to place a call to a help desk located who knows where," Colella said. "People are immensely grateful to have an empathetic and articulate service person come into their home or business, sit down and fix the problem then and there."

It isn't easy to qualify as a Nerds To Go service person or "Nerd" as they are affectionately called. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of experience in computer support and must have passed the hardware and operating systems exams for the CompTIA A+ certification.

"Recently we serviced an accountant's computer," Colella said. "The accountant asked us about the significance of the CompTIA A+ certification. Our technician explained that working with a certified IT technician is similar to working with a certified public accountant -- both have successfully gone through a strenuous certification process."

Nerds To Go offers in-home service rates that range from $99 to $300, depending on the scope of the problem. For emergencies after hours, Nerds To Go partners with a 24/7 telephone help desk service that is equally versatile and supplier-independent.

The Nerds To Go motto is, "Fast, Friendly, Reliable Service - We come to you". Judging by the acceptance of this home-grown Connecticut company, its professionally certified technicians are just the people consumers and small-business owners want to see when they are setting up a new system on when their computer develops an intractable problem.
