Western Data Systems (WDS) announced that the Space and Communication unit of The Boeing Company has selected and begun implementation of CompassENTERPRISE(R) from Western Data Systems at its manufacturing facility

The new system includes WDS CompassCONTRACT(R), Supply Chain Procurement and workbench applications. With the addition of Huntsville, Boeing is now using or actively implementing WDS software at eight sites. This project further expands Boeing's use of CompassENTERPRISE within the Space and Communication unit - implementation is nearing completion at sites in Anaheim, Calif. and El Paso, Texas. In addition, CompassENTERPRISE is already in use at multiple sites within Boeing Military Aircraft and Missiles Systems and Boeing, Australia.

The Boeing Huntsville site consists of pre-merger operations of the former McDonnell Douglas, Rockwell Aerospace, Rocketdyne and Boeing. The CompassENTERPRISE based system will replace multiple mainframe-based legacy systems with a single sitewide operations system running on a combination of Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems servers, the Oracle 8 RDBMS, and a network of Windows PCs. The first implementation phase is targeted for early 2001 and will ultimately be used by the majority of the operations' approximately 3,000 employees. In the initial phase, Boeing is implementing CompassENTERPRISE as a client/server system with plans to move to the Web-enabled environment. In addition to assisting with the implementation of CompassENTERPRISE, WDS is developing integration with iBASEt's Solumina product; a paperless process planning and manufacturing execution system. Boeing is also developing interfaces to several other specialized in-house systems.
