QUEENS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 31, 1997--

Agreement signed to publish Chinese-language Yellow Pages

Shopping soon will be easier for New York City's Chinese residents thanks to two publishing companies.

NYNEX Information Resources Company, publisher of

more than 300 White and Yellow Page directories with some 100 years of experience, and World Journal, publisher of the largest daily Chinese-language newspaper in North America, today announced that they will join forces to publish a Chinese-language New York City Yellow Pages directory for the Chinese community.

Some 80,000 copies will be distributed in November to New York-area Chinese businesses and consumers.

"Today's announcement extends NYNEX's commitment to make it easier for multi-cultural buyers to find what they need and for merchants to reach all members of New York's diverse community in their preferred language," said Mat Stover, president and CEO of NYNEX Information Resources Company. "Working together with World Journal enables us to provide Chinese consumers in New York CIty with a comprehensive guide for all of their shopping needs."

After conducting extensive market research in the New York City area, NYNEX found that Chinese consumers prefer to use in-language resources to learn about products and services available at local businesses. Responding to this need, NYNEX and World Journal will provide a Chinese-language directory that will make shopping easier for Chinese consumers.

"Our company is proud to be a part of this exciting project," said World Journal President Howard Lee. "We will bring 21 years of Chinese newspaper publishing experience to help make this the best shopping directory for the Chinese Community."

The directory will include special Inside Interest Pages that contain information important to Chinese residents in the New York City area.

NYNEX and World Journal also announced that R.H. Donnelley will be the exclusive sales agent in the NYNEX region for the directory.

The Chinese-language Yellow Pages is one of several in-language products that NYNEX offers consumers. NYNEX also published fully bilingual English-Spanish community directories in Harlem and Washington Heights/Inwood last year, and will distribute its first fully bilingual Yellow Pages directory for the Bronx in April.

NYNEX also has a full service center for resident customers located in the heart of Chinatown at 11-12 Chatham Square. There are 7 bilingual Chinese-English-speaking representatives available to assist customers and answer questions six days a week. Since 1993, NYNEX has provided Chinese customers an in-language Chinese channel called Chinatone. This channel allows in-bound callers to speak to one of some 35 sales and service representatives who speak both Chinese and English.
