According to Monster Data Intelligence, a group focused on analyzing Monster data, job seekers' willingness to move, varies greatly across industries, with Engineering (69 percent) illustrating the highest percentage of employees considering relocation. Other industries in which a majority of professionals indicated their willingness to move include Agricultural, Forestry, and Fishing (66 percent), Consulting Services (65 percent), Military (65 percent), Science (64 percent), Finance/Economics (63 percent), Government and Policy (62 percent), Law Enforcement (63 percent), and Hospitality/Tourism (62 percent). Less willing to move are employees in Administrative and Support Services (30 percent), Customer Service and Call Center (33 percent), and Accounting/Auditing (38 percent).
Who's moving? Which professionals are open to relocation?
Based on Monster research, willingness to move is most prevalent at the highest career levels and maximum educational degree achieved. Doctoral degree recipients are most amenable to moving (71 percent), followed by those holding a master's degree, (67 percent), bachelor's degree (59 percent), vocational degree (49 percent), associate degree (46 percent), certification (43 percent), some college coursework (39 percent), and high school or equivalent degree (37 percent). Similarly, job seeker mobility is most prevalent at higher career levels, with 70 percent of executives willing to relocate, followed by senior executives (65 percent), entry-level (55 percent), management (52 percent), undergraduate and graduate students (49 percent), mid-career (45 percent), and high school students (27 percent).
Where to? Job seekers select most desirable cities
Target states for relocation were scattered across the country and consist mostly of the nation's major cities. California was cited as the most desirable location, with 23 percent of job seekers listing the state as their top pick. Florida ranked second (22 percent), followed by New York (19 percent), Georgia (16 percent), Colorado, North Carolina and Texas (14 percent).
Most sought-after locations also varied by job category. Professionals seeking employment in Advertising/Marketing/PR selected New York as their most popular destination, with 30 percent naming the Big Apple as their primary relocation target. California was the state of choice for Arts/Entertainment/Media job seekers (38 percent) and IT professionals (22 percent), while Colorado earned first place among job seekers in Agricultural, Forestry, and Fishing (25 percent). District of Columbia was number one for those seeking Government and Policy job opportunities.
