Medical technology is characterised by a high rate of innovation, which is continually increasing. This innovation is underpinned by a convergence of technologies such as advanced materials science, information technology, cell and tissue biology and nanotechnology. At first glance this may seem incompatible with standardisation, which is often associated with mature and established technologies and is often segmented into different standards organisations that deal with different areas of technology.
