AT&T EXTENDS ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR SATELLITE NETWORK TO UK.

MARIETTA, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 1996--AT&T announced today it is helping Enterprise Rent-A-Car, an industry leader with the largest car rental fleet in the US, expand its operations in the UK. AT&T Tridom will supply Enterprise with Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) satellite technology

Enterprise is using VSAT technology in the UK for its speed advantage in linking new or existing branches to receive high-quality data communications. VSAT equipment usually can be set up and operational within a few days. In addition, the technology offers Enterprise the potential for rapid pan-European growth. "VSAT technology is an important part of our US operations," said Andy Taylor, president and CEO, Enterprise Rent-A-Car. "Extending its use to the UK was the logical way to ensure fast, easy integration of new branches into our corporate network."

Each VSAT site uses a lightweight 1.2 meter diameter dish connected to an indoor transmit/receive unit. The unit serves either a single PC or a number of Point of Sale terminals connected to a local area network.

The UK sites connect into the US-based Enterprise Rent-A-Car network through the company's private satellite hubs at its St. Louis, Mo., headquarters. Each site in the Enterprise network can transmit and receive data, including vehicle availability, bookings and online credit card validation. Transaction details are relayed from a site to the St. Louis data center that has the potential to handle up to 1.5 million transactions per hour.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car specializes in renting vehicles to the "hometown" rental market by 1) placing branches within 15 minutes of about 90 percent of the population in all major US cities; 2) picking up renters at the home, office or repair shop and 3) pricing rental cars as much as 30 percent below airport prices.
