BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 1997-- Raytheon Electronic Systems has been awarded a competitive $44 million contract by the U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Command (CECOM) of Fort Monmouth, NJ. Under the contract, Raytheon will develop, manufacture, install and provide logistics support for the Multiplex Integration and Defense Communications Satellite System (DCSS) Automation Systems (MIDAS) for the global network of 88 Defense Satellite Communication System (DSCS) nodes. MIDAS provides user data interfaces, multiplexing, and cryptographic functions for worldwide defense communication. It improves system efficiency through automation and lowers operating and maintenance costs.
Raytheon, along with team members COMSAT-RSI and DNE Technologies, will supply systems which integrate equipment that offers compact, low-cost, modular multiplexers and cryptographic modules, matrix switching and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) processing baseband communications equipment. Raytheon's advanced technology and compact modular packaging dramatically reduces MIDAS' size from 10 racks of equipment to single rack configurations at most sites. The advanced MIDAS electronic modules are derived from the company's Triband Tactical SATCOM Terminal program (T3(H)) previously won last year.
In addition, Raytheon was awarded $10 million from CECOM for low rate initial manufacturing of compact, low-cost, programmable VME INFOSEC Modules (VIM) in support of tactical mobile, transportable secure communications capabilities.
As a product improvement for the T3(H) program, the VIM module will replace current military cryptography products that are larger, heavier and more expensive discrete equipment items.
The VIM represents a significant reduction in weight, power, and volume as well as increased reliability. This product furthers the Army's Force XXI goals of lighter, smaller, faster vehicular-mounted systems with rapid set-up times. The VIM also reduces logistics costs and simplifies crypto key loading operations.
Quintin George, Manager of Communication Systems at Raytheon Electronic Systems, stated, "We are extremely pleased with the contracts awarded by the Army on MIDAS and VIM and look forward to the continued expansion of Raytheon's integrated product line of satellite communications systems in both domestic and international communication markets."
Raytheon Company (NYSE:RTN), headquartered in Lexington, Mass, is a $12.3 billion international high technology company that operates in four businesses: commercial and defense electronics, engineering and construction; aircraft; and major appliances. Raytheon celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.
