GENERAL SESSIONS
FEBRUARY 10, 2000 // 12:30 PM-2:30 PH
OPENING GENERAL SESSION
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Join us for a powerful opening general session about leadership featuring keynote speaker, General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.), the 65th Secretary of State. General Powell brought extensive experience with him to his office. Before becoming Secretary of State, he served as a key aide to the Secretary of Defense and as National Security Advisor to President Reagan. He also served 35 years in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Four-Star General and serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-1993). During this time he oversaw 28 crises to include the Panama intervention of 1989 and Operation Desert Storm in the victorious 1991 Persian Gulf War. That experience served him well, both before and particularly after the events of September 11, 2001. As Secretary he stood shoulder to shoulder with the President and the other members of the President's cabinet in fighting the war on terrorism. He affirmed the U.S. commitment to extend democracy and freedom to every corner of the world. In all areas, he used the power of diplomacy and the universal ideal of democracy to build trust, forge alliances and then begin to transform these once-unstable regions into areas where societies and cultures prosper. General Powell was devoted to grasping opportunities as well as to confronting the global and regional security challenges of the 21st century. He was at the forefront of the administration's efforts to advance economic and social development worldwide--in the fight against HIV/AIDS, in the promise of the Millennium Challenge Account, the most significant change in helping needy nations since the Marshall Plan, and in pursuing a freer trading and investment climate worldwide. Powell's numerous awards include two Presidential Medals of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Certainly, one of the most admired men in America, he has been a leader for most of his life, having led troops as both a military leader, as chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff and as Secretary of State. But Gen. Powell believes a leader is more than just his or her title. Drawing on examples garnered from experience as both a leader on the world stage and as eyewitness to leadership in action, Gen. Powell will illustrate precisely what it takes to be a leader, providing strategies for "taking charge" during times of great change and great crises. Gen. Powell will demonstrate how to remain focused, take responsibility and work towards improving processes, organizations and people. Plus, we'll present our highest honor, the IFA Hall of Fame Award. This is a session you won't want to miss.

PANEL OF THE PROS
A highlight each year, the Panel of the Pros features top franchise leaders discussing a hot topic relevant to the growth and success of all franchise systems--and this year will be no exception. Our 2008 Panel of the Pros takes a turn right into your bottom line--customer service, the very life blood of every retail operation. What does it cost you to get a customer? What if you lose a customer--what's the cost to get him or her back? This session examines customer service issues on a practical level with dollars and cents information you can take back to your operation and use immediately. It's why we call it the Panel of the Pros. You can't get this information anywhere else. With four Pros and four viewpoints--this is guaranteed to be a dynamic discussion that you won't want to miss. 9TH ANNUAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Hosted by the Women's Franchise Committee
A BRAVE NEW WORKPLACE--CREATING AN INNOVATIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR TODAY'S TOP TALENT
Last year, our Leadership Conference program focused on generational diversity in the workplace. This year we'll take that discussion one step further to shed some light on what franchise organizations must do today in order to recruit and retain top talent, arguably one of the most important contributors to the success of any business. Getting the right people on board to create the infrastructure of your organization, and keeping them on board, is paramount, especially considering the growing crop of new employees whose expectations and motivations are significantly different than previous generations. Spherion Corporation, a franchisor in the recruiting and staffing industry, has conducted several surveys over the last 10 years with U.S. companies and their employees about what is important to them as workplace trends change. They discovered a growing group of U.S. workers, dubbed "emergent workers" by Spherion, has developed different motivations and attitudes about work and their workplace. It is imperative for organizations to meet the needs of this important group, which include a desire for work/life balance and flexibility. What are the motivating factors of the today's workforce? What innovative benefits must you offer in order to make your workplace attractive to the new breed of workers? How can you groom your future leaders? Join us as Spherion reveals their fascinating research results, followed by a panel discussion with some of today's top franchise executives sharing thoughts on why they decided to offer certain benefits within their system, what the result has been to their bottom line and what challenges they have faced along the way. Roundtables and other networking time during the afternoon allow attendees to build relationships and share ideas. The Leadership Conference is open to fully-registered Convention attendees for an additional fee of $50. Please indicate your attendance on our registration form before sending it to the IFA offices.
