BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 2003

The Engineering Council of Birmingham will name BE&K, Inc. Chief Executive Officer T. Michael Goodrich, the Leadership Award recipient at their annual dinner commemorating National Engineers Week tonight at

The Club in Birmingham. The industry group presents the award in recognition of individuals and companies that establish a leadership role in engineering through business practices or technical innovations. Goodrich will speak on the topic of, "Diversity, the next engineering solution."

Goodrich will site statistics on the growing demand for engineering skills and a recent trend toward declining enrollment. He is expected to challenge his Alabama colleagues to design a solution and to engage more women and minorities in the profession.

Goodrich joined BE&K 30 years ago after serving as a law clerk and administrative assistant to Alabama Supreme Court Justice Howell Heflin. Goodrich received his BS Degree in Civil Engineering from Tulane University and his law degree from the University of Alabama.

During his college years he worked a summer job for a local engineering firm and discovered the construction industry. In addition to ascending through the BE&K organization, Goodrich has been an industry activist. He serves on the Board of Advisors of the Construction Industry Round Table and is a member of NAC (National Academy of Construction). He is a member of the Alabama State Bar Association and the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry. Goodrich has also guided BE&K efforts to expand the opportunities afforded to women and minorities in the construction industry.

BE&K, through its global network of affiliate companies, provides engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance services to the process, manufacturing, industrial, power, and telecommunications industries. BE&K is 155 on Forbes annual ranking of the "Top 500 Privately Held Companies in the U.S.", has been honored as a recipient of Working Woman magazine's "Diversity Champion" award, and included in Fortune Magazine's listing of "Best Places to Work in America." This year marks the 30 year anniversary of BE&K.
