Are You Ready to Go Out on Your Own?

Saturday, December 8 2007

Pamela Slim just started something big with a post on How do you know when is the right time to quit your job? Pam's blog is called Escape from Cubicle Nation, and it is aimed at all those who would love to escape from their corporate cubicles. She hit the target!

First of all, she offered 7 tests -- questions you need to ask yourself -- to help you focus on your own answer. All of this was very insightful. But then her readers came up with their own views on the topic.  As of this post, I think there are over 15 comments.

It isn't going to be the same for everyone. Sometimes you don't get to choose the timing yourself. I come from the generation of the dot-com-busted. Some of us went back to cubicles, and some of us stayed out on our own. I believe that several traits distinguish those who took to entrepreneurship:

  • A strong sense of independence
  • A desire for control over your life
  • A financial safety net.

If you're going to make the leap without a shove, ask yourself if you have all of these.  If you do, go for it!
