Home Based Business Mentality

Working from home is not necessarily the same as a home based business.

According to Google's keyword tool, about 823,000 searches are done for 'home based business' per month and about 1.5 million searches are done for 'work from home' each month. This disparity in numbers might tell us something - that more people are interested in working from home than there are people interested in a home based business. Almost double in fact.

At first glance, you might think those two terms are really just two terms meaning the same thing. But that isn't exactly true. I consider there to be a huge difference in mentality between the two.

Work from home indicates the desire to spend more time at home with family and to enjoy the benefit of not commuting to and from a job location. These give you more freedom with your time. However, the term also indicates an "employee" mentality that just wants to 'work from home' yet still under some sort of direction. In other words, a job where you are working for someone else, but doing it at home.

A home based business on the other hand, includes all the freedom aspects, but it also indicates the desire to actually run a business; not work for someone else. It's a notch up from 'work from home' because it indicates the desire to be one's own boss and be accountable for one's own business.

Not everyone gives this much thought when they're considering a home based business. Many people think about working from home but don't really think about it in terms of building a home based business. But it's a vast difference in mentality. Which one are you?
