For a Home Based Business Ditch the Employee Mentality

Thursday, July 2 2009

People that get started in a home based business often do so after having worked at a job. Or maybe they start the home business because they can't find a job in today's economy. Either way, what they usually bring with them is an "employee mentality".

When you worked at a job, you had someone else scheduling your time, telling you when you could have lunch, and giving you various other instructions and direction. When you take on a home based business, all that structure disappears. With a home based business, you must be self directed. Unless you are able to be self directed, your home business won't go anywhere.

This sounds like an easy transition to make doesn't it? You know - be your own boss. Who doesn't want to do that? But the truth is, it's not that straightforward of a transition.

Directing your own time and business activities will require a great deal of discipline on your part. You will have to avoid household distractions like television, non business internet surfing, garden chores, etc. These distractions were never around when you were an employee and if they were, they were probably well controlled. Furthermore, you will have to adhere to some kind of schedule and task list - preferably one that will stretch you a bit.

So if you really want to build a successful home based business, you will need to leave that "employee mentality" behind.
