Home Based Business Websites often Replicated Sites

Thursday, August 28 2008

Often times, home based business opportunities are marketed with a "get your own free website" feature. Or maybe it's not free. It might be a pre-designed company supplied website that you have to pay for. But pre-designed company supplied websites are not always a good idea.

The biggest problem with these types of websites is that they tend to be replicated sites. Perhaps the only difference in your site might be that your name or your company name gets attached. That means your site has the same content as the company's and everyone else in the company. This is problematic from the standpoint of getting any attention from the search engines.

Search engines such as Google do not like duplicate content. And Google's algorithm in particular frowns heavily on replicated sites. Replicated sites are a spammer's tool and you probably don't want your home business to be seen as a spam site.

A company supplied website might be ok if it is a template where you provide the content. This would allow you to create your own content and thus have a unique website. In the 'eyes' of the search engines, that would mean a site to pay attention to. But Google (and other search engines) tend to ignore replicated websites.

So if your home based business opportunity offers a free website, make sure you know what kind of website you will be getting. Be sure you can customize it to some extent or at least create your own content on it.
