Government Resources to Green Your Small Business

Wednesday, July 2 2008

Starting a new business can be tough, and for many start-ups, the last thing they want to do is shell out precious additional dollars to “Go Green.”  New technologies and increased demand for “green” products and processes make it easier than ever to start green and stay green.  You probably have learned through my last few posts how going green can save you money in the long run, but now we will show you how starting a business with a green focus may help you be more successful right off the bat. New businesses looking to differentiate themselves from competitors can easily obtain a sustainable competitive advantage by “going green.”

As a new business, it is imperative to market your products effectively. Recent studies show that consumers are attracted to “green” products and the demand for “green” products is rapidly escalating. Check out research on consumer attitudes towards “green” products. Not surprisingly, the research shows the overall attitude towards environmentally friendly products is positive.  This positive attitude can be leveraged in your company promotions to associate the same positive attitude and create an affinity for your company and products, giving you a competitive advantage over other companies ignoring this trend.

Going Green - Green Standards

Eco-labeling is also an authoritative way to satisfy your eco-conscious customers with credible claims. Many third-party organizations have set standards that certify products as “green.”  Eco-labels can be added to product packaging, advertising, and other promotional efforts to appeal to the eco-conscious consumer and increase sales. These eco-labels are also used as incentives for business owners to modify their products to be environmentally friendly. The Green Marketing Regulations, for example, outlines compliance laws laid down by the Federal Trade Commission.

Business owners need to be careful to monitor the incremental business opportunity for going green depending on your business type.  Some products and services lend themselves to this type of marketing easier than others, but the benefits can be reaped by all.  For those companies that may only see a marginal benefit from promoting themselves as a green company, strategic and cost-effective methods can be chosen to go green over time.  Simple energy saving tips can save businesses a lot of money while also helping out the environment. For example, replacing light bulbs with fluorescent ones can save businesses 75% in lighting expenses. Along with water, and heat and air conservation, these savings can add up!

Government Incentives for Going Green

How else can you ensure the bottom line is not hurt by going green? Believe it or not, most states also offer incentives and aid to small businesses looking to go green and you can easily identify the programs in your own state. Some states even offer programs that give grants and loans for companies to make energy efficient upgrades. Now that’s an incentive that is good for all!
