Popeye's Chicken founder Al Copeland dies.

Al Copeland, 64, founder of Popeye's Famous Fried Chicken and several other restaurant concepts, died March 23 in Germany where he had gone to continue treatment for cancer.

Named IFA's Entrepreneur of the Year in 1989, Copeland launched his first restaurant venture, Chicken on the Run,

in 1971. The project ultimately became Popeye's, which today has more than 1,700 establishments.

Copeland's survivors include nine children and 13 grandchildren.
