Dec. 14--TWO VIEWS BRING SOFTWARE'S 'OTHER BILLIONAIRE' IN FOCUS: In distinguishing between the two new books about Oracle Corp. chief executive Larry Ellison, the footnotes tell the story.

Matthew Symonds, who spent two years tagging along with Ellison at work and play, gave the software executive "a unique form of joint copyright" -- the ability to write uncensored footnotes to rebut or amplify any part of the text. In contrast, Karen Southwick uses footnotes to credit her sources
