PT Kabelmetal Indonesia (KI) obtained its licence for operating under the PMA (Foreign Investment) Scheme in 1970. The company was set up by three West German investors and two domestic companies, namely PT Gajah Tunggal Mulia and PT Fortius.
Later the company's share ownership underwent changes.
