BR ANNOUNCES DEEPWATER SURINAMEPROJECT.

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 23, 1999--

Burlington Resources Inc. (NYSE:BR) through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Burlington Resources International Inc. today announced that Burlington Resources Suriname Limited, an affiliated company, has entered into an agreement with Staatsolie Maatschappij

Suriname N.V. the state owned oil company of Suriname, to explore for oil and gas in offshore deepwater Suriname. The terms of the production sharing agreement with Staatsolie calls for an initial exploration phase during which BR Suriname and its partners will acquire several thousand kilometers of seismic data. BR Suriname (35%) will operate the approximately 18,500 square mile offshore block, with partners Shell E P Suriname B.V. (35%), Totalfina Exploration Suriname (15%) and Korea National Oil Corporation (15%). John A.
