SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 27, 2002
If you spotted the Lectora Publisher logo on an athlete at the recent Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, you weren't mistaken. The e-learning authoring software from Trivantis Corporation made its Olympic debut on the sleeve of Cameroon cross-country skier, Isaac Menyoli. Bringing together an award-winning e-learning authoring tool with a skier from equatorial Africa sounds far-fetched, but it happened at the 2002 Winter Games.
Jim Greensfelder of Cincinnati, Ohio was the catalyst. As an Olympic historian and collector of Olympic medals, Greensfelder stays attuned to what's going on in the Games. As a member of the board of directors at Trivantis, Greensfelder is familiar with Lectora Publisher. When he heard that Menyoli was financing his Olympic dream on his own, Greensfelder decided to help the African skier. In exchange for his support, Menyoli agreed to sport the Lectora logo on his sleeve.
Menyoli was inspired by Phillip Boit from Kenya who became the first African skier at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. While working on his master's degree in architecture at the University of Wisconsin in 1997, Menyoli began cross-country skiing. One year later he decided to set his sites on the 2002 Winter Games and began training seriously. In 2001, he qualified to participate in the Games. In 2002, he was an athlete in three cross-country skiing events in the Olympics.
Though Menyoli knew that his odds of winning a medal were low, he shrewdly recognized that his opportunity for international publicity were high, an opportunity that could help bring attention to the problem of AIDS in his home country. Like the Jamaican bobsled team, Menyoli was able to garner attention through his unorthodox situation, which resulted in his interviews appearing in newspapers, on television (including David Letterman), and on the Internet around the world.
"Menyoli is a both a great humanitarian and an athlete," said Greensfelder, "even though his goals didn't include winning medals, he achieved success at the 2002 Winter Games. It was a thrill to watch him compete and a privilege to help him reach his goals."
