SAP Business One Done Right by Vision 33
SAP Business One customer success story about footwear startup based in Portland, Oregon: Thomas Raymond & Co.
Vision33 introduced me, on paper, to Thomas Raymond & Co based in Portland, Oregon. They are a startup footwear company. Aside from a handful of women that I know who have shoe fetishes, I don't think about shoes. Now that I think about, I know way more than a handful of women with shoe fetishes. Thankfully, my wife isn't one of them!
Back to Thomas Raymond and Co. So how does a guy who does not have a shoe fetish, who wears his shoes until they have multiple holes in them, pay attention to a startup footwear company? You mention Ernest Hemingway and evoke childhood memories of hunting, fishing, hiking and carrying some Hemingway book somewhere in the backpack. If that man's name doesn't evoke outdoor and rugged, I don't know what does.
Here's the branding brilliance as I've heard it -- Thomas Raymond and Co licensed the Hemingway name to create a new line of shoes with the essence of the famous author and outdoorsman's name. The Ernest Hemingway Collection will feature hand crafted footwear, using the highest quality components, unique full grain leathers, comfort features, and collections that relate to his lifestyle in all seasons.
Here's the brief nuts and bolts of why they chose a high end solution as a startup:
- Wanted a software solution that would scale as they grew. They didn't want to interrupt operations with software migrations.
- They wanted to start with general ledger functions and expand AP/AR, then inventory and warehouse management functionality as stock increased.
- EDI (electronic data exchange) would be needed later for retailer requirements and online sales.
- It helped facilitate sales with other large retailers who use SAP.

As I wrote about SAP this spring, I was skeptical that they truly were reaching the small business market. But they've proved me wrong and I'll continue to write about innovative young companies that are using SAP Business One.
