Humor Will Keep You Sane When Working at Home
It's tough to work at home. What will help you get through the day is a bit of humor. Here are a few ideas.
My colleague Dan Reinhold is a super humorist! He can always find the humor in a situation and can be counted on for a laugh or two. So I asked him to share some ideas with you about how you can use humor when working at home to stay on an even keel. Take it away Dan!
Small businesses are everywhere. Statistics claim that small businesses account for the majority of business in the US. Yep, they're everywhere all right, but more and more small businesses are not in the usual places you might expect. Some juggle both brick and mortar and online presences, while others opt to take it all on the Internet.
Offline, online or hybrid, they all have one major need -- humor.
Even more than good reliable suppliers, punctual and hassle-free deliveries or prompt and efficient payment, they need humor. Daily. All they can get. They need humor because, let's face it, suppliers, deliveries and payment are never that predictable, and definitely not on a daily basis. Anyone who seriously believes that needs to re-open their childhood lemonade stand because they're not ready for much more.
And who do small businesses depend upon to keep surviving as small businesses? Customers. (Better write that down. On the back of your hand. In permanent ink.) Do customers always hang on to their sense of humor? Sure, as long as the suppliers, deliveries and all that play their parts well. That's never as long as you'd like it to be, though.
Funny thing about humor and the laughter it brings -- it always changes things you can control for the better. That would be your attitude, perspective, thinking and thought process, not to mention your stress level. A good laugh or even the occasional chuckle cuts through stress like a hot knife through low-cholesterol spread.
You don't need to sponsor the local comedy club to get your daily requirement of humor and laughter. Sometimes those guys aren't funny, or they're funny in a way that's not so good for business. Little doses help a lot more and they come much, much cheaper.
So here are some things you can try to bring humor into your work at home space:

So here are some things you can try to bring humor into your work at home space:
- Distribute funny post it notes to your partner, your employees,
your CPA, whoever's in this with you.
- Have lunch together with your staff twice or more a
week and bring the best joke you've heard to share.
- Designate Friday as
"funny T-shirt" day instead of just plain old casual day.
- Share stories of
customer nightmares that you can genuinely look back upon and laugh (not
around that customer, of course).
- Get a book of humorous quotes and pick
one for the quote of the day.
