No matter what happens in a downturn in our economy, savvy small business owners will always find a way to survive and in many instances thrive. Despite the doom and gloom being broadcast everywhere, we all need to take a moment to give thanks that we live in a place that permits us the opportunity to go out, test an idea, and hope for the best. Americans always root for the underdog and support David in a good old fashioned David vs. Goliath battle for the consumer dollar. We know the human being that owns the small business, but does anyone really know who makes the decisions at Wal-Mart?

What techniques are small business owners using now to survive and thrive?

1) We cater on a personal level to the needs and wants of our target audience.

2) We have a hard core of devoted regular customers unswayed by just lower prices or fees.

3) We display family values and our families support us - our customers sense our strong family values.

4) We feature local and home grown products and use other local business people and subcontractors to support our businesses.

5) When given a choice, We use locally owned businesses whenever posiible to keep our local business communities strong.

In closing, at this time of year we must all take the time to reflect on the freedom our country affords us and give thanks.

The ability to have a more of a personal relationship with our customers as a small business owner is a definite plus over big businesses. In addition, being small makes it easier for us to adjust and adapt to our customer's needs, which are significantly changing as result of our country's recent hardship.

There are a lot of big businesses and major corporations closing their doors, which will create a lot opportunity and need for small businesses. Perhaps one of the benefits that will come out of this catastrophe after the dust settles is better products, services and customer service as a result of more being provided via small business owners.

I agree. It's a great time to seize the opportunities available out there. In a struggling economy, consumers want to know they're appreciated and good customer service and the small simple touches go along way.
Hat's off to all the small business owners who may struggle but will eventually come out on top. There is no better place to be than America where doom and gloom doesn't take us all down. Stay strong, small business!
