Jun. 17--The chairman and chief executive officer of a Canadian company that makes farm machinery has purchased a 6.6 percent stake in West Bend-based farm and construction equipment maker Gehl Co., which has fought off two hostile takeover attempts since 1999.

John Buhler, who operates Buhler Industries Inc., said Monday that his recent purchase of stock in Gehl is an investment -- and not a prelude to an eventual takeover attempt.
